My 2024 Hghlights
As the year winds down and the Christmas leftovers take over the fridge, it’s the perfect time to reflect on what made 2024 truly memorable. By now, you’ve likely indulged in enough turkey and ham to last well into January, unwrapped your gifts, and mentally sorted them into “keepers” and “next year’s re-gifts.” Maybe you’re wearing those novelty socks from Aunty Gertrude (purely out of love, of course) and nursing the last bottle of Prosecco, spoon in the neck to keep the fizz alive. Now, with the hustle and bustle behind us, it’s time to sit back, relax, and focus on what really matters—some quality “you” time. So, let’s take a look at my Top 5 2024 Watches.
For me, that means reflecting on the watches that left a lasting impression this year. 2024 has been an exciting year in the watch world, with releases that sparked conversation and pushed boundaries. From household names to the daring microbrands and independents, the diversity and creativity we’ve seen have been nothing short of extraordinary. So, as the festive haze settles, I’ve decided to round up my favourite watches of the year—pieces that stood out not just for their design and innovation, but for the stories they told and the impact they made. Let’s take a closer look at the true standouts of 2024.
Christopher Ward Bel Canto Classic
2024 has to be a stand-out year for Christopher Ward, as they have given us a plethora of stellar watches this year. The C60 Trident Lumieré cannot be overlooked as one that has made a huge impact on the brand, but for me, it was the revamping of the Bel Canto that was a stand-out piece. The C1 Bel Canto Classic, with its beautiful laser-etched guilloché patterned dial, stood head and shoulders above the rest. A colour for everyone, a choice of green, silver or blue, but it was the gold that really shone for me.
With the additional option of the Seta leather strap, which offered a beautiful deployant clasp, this was the perfect pairing and one Christopher Ward and their team will be extremely proud of. They seemed to have really stepped up a gear and have been coming up with some exceptional designs, and all at very reasonable prices. I look forward to what 2025 has in the stall for us.
Tudor Pelagos FXD GMT
One of the biggest hitters this year has been Tudor, and they have had a blockbuster year in 2024, starting in March with the bold Black Bay Chrono Pink. April saw a flurry of activity with four releases: the minimalist Black Bay Monochrome, the vintage-inspired Black Bay 58 GMT, the luxurious 18kt gold Black Bay 58 Green, and two blue-dialed Clair de Rose models.
In May, Tudor catered to athletes with the Pelagos FXD Chrono Cycling Edition, while July brought a fresh twist with the blue-dialed Black Bay Ceramic. By August, fans were treated to the Black Bay Chrono ‘Blue’ Boutique Edition, and October closed the year on a high with the much-anticipated Pelagos FXD GMT. This was the real highlight for me, as I have a real soft spot for the FXD and one with a GMT. Let’s say they have ticked many boxes this year, and I can’t wait to see what 2025 has in stall for Tudor fans
Omega’s First Watch In Space
Omega has given us countless Speedmasters over the years, perhaps a few too many? But even within the huge back catalogue, some still stand out. Almost at the end of 2024, they gave us the First Omega in Space, and what a cracking tribute of a watch that is.
In 1962, astronaut Walter Schirra’s groundbreaking mission marked OMEGA’s first journey to space. Now, a modern iteration of that iconic timepiece makes its return, blending nostalgia with contemporary innovation. Paying homage to the original, this reimagined Speedmaster showcases details like the “Dot Over Ninety” on the bezel and the retro OMEGA emblem. Enhancing its vintage-inspired charm, a newly designed sapphire crystal replicates the classic domed profile of the watch worn in orbit over six decades ago.
I recently had the pleasure of trying one on and was taken by it. So, regardless of the number of ” Speedys” out there, there is still an appetite for them.
Tudor Black Bay Chrono Pink
This Top 5 2024 Watches wouldn’t be complete without the Tudor Black Bay Chronograph Pink. It was way back in March when this graced our eyes for the first time, and everyone wanted one. Even now, we’re at the end of December, and we have seen plenty of these hit the market. Although most have gone to some kind of influencers, or those with a large social presence.
Mark has been after one since the launch and, as of yet, is still to get one in his collection. Hopefully, this could be the year that this happens for him. The Black Bay Chronograph isn’t a groundbreaking release from Tudor, but it’s proven to be a consistent success. The “Pink” edition, in particular, has continued to sell exceptionally well, maintaining its popularity long after its launch. Bringing it out such a bold colour was a masterstroke and one that whoever was responsible for it should be given free rein to do the same for 2025. Perhaps we’ll see a bright green or purple, only time will tell.
Toledano & Chan B/1
I’ve saved the best for last because the Toledano & Chan B/1 was, without question, my standout watch of 2024. It takes the top spot on my *Top 5 Watches of 2024* list. This watch gave me what I can only describe as the “fizz” the moment it graced my wrist. A surge of excitement and an instant connection that’s hard to put into words. No, it wasn’t a reaction to my aftershave; it was pure horological magic. Even though I only had the chance to try it once, that feeling has lingered, proving how special this piece truly is.
Designed by Phil Toledano and Alfred Chan, the B/1 is a head-turner wherever it’s seen. Selling out in just 46 minutes, this 175-piece limited edition has made a seismic impact on the watch world. Inspired by a window in New York’s Met Breuer building and infused with their love for brutalist design. With a nod to the Rolex King Midas—the B/1 is a future classic in the making.
This watch is more than just a design triumph; it’s a statement piece that cements Toledano & Chan as a brand to watch. Their innovative approach and bold aesthetic put them miles ahead of the competition. I, for one, will be first in line when their next model drops.
My Thoughts
As 2024 comes to a close, it’s time to cast our eyes forward to what 2025 might bring. While only the brands hold the secrets of what’s to come, if this year is any indication, we’re in for something special. My hunch? We’ll see more shaped and architectural-inspired designs making waves. I’m crossing my fingers that Toledano & Chan will grace us with a new release. If they do, you can bet I’ll be first in line.
Looking at Tudor, I’m optimistic about their 2025 lineup. They’ve delivered some truly defining pieces this year, and it feels like the design team has hit their stride. The Black Bay Chrono Pink, with its daring colour palette, was a standout in 2024. If they continue to push bold, creative designs, Tudor could be setting the stage for an exciting year ahead. Here’s to hoping! I wonder what your choice may be of my Top 5 2024 Watches?
