Tudor Pelagos FXD Chrono ‘Cycling Edition’
Almost 11 months to the day, Tudor dropped on us two alternative models of the FXD. To support the Alinghi Red Bull Racing team in the America’s Cup. There was a stock FXD, and a chronograph variant, both featuring Carbon cases. Today’s release sees Tudor supporting their cycling team, who are competing in the upcoming 2024 Giro d’Italia.
They’ve Gone Cycling
Cyclists are embarking on the first stage—a 140 km journey from Venaria Reale to Torino. The prestigious race, first held in 1909, introduces a thrilling update this year: the debut of the Tudor Pro Cycling Team. As they tackle all 3,400 km of the arduous 21-stage race, this young team’s participation in their first Grand Tour is a momentous occasion. In celebration, Tudor has unveiled the Pelagos FXD Chrono “Cycling Edition.”
This special edition watch features a matte carbon case, a color scheme inspired by the team, a fixed 60-minute bezel, and a unique cyclist-adapted tachymeter scale, echoing the design philosophy of the Alinghi Red Bull Racing Edition chronograph, but geared for terrestrial endeavors on two wheels.
A Fresh Spin On A Carbon Classic
At the heart of the newly introduced FXD Chronograph is a design ethos that closely mirrors the earlier Red Bull edition. Both editions feature a robust 43mm matte carbon case, powered by an automatic chronograph movement, maintaining the athletic spirit inherent in the FXD series. This version adopts a distinct visual theme, showcasing a black dial detailed with red accents—colors emblematic of both Tudor and the Tudor Pro Cycling Team. The accompanying black fabric strap also reflects this thematic colourway.
The Cycling Edition sets itself apart with several features finely tuned for cycling enthusiasts. Notably, the watch includes a fixed 60-minute bezel and reduces its water resistance to 100 meters, down from 200 meters, reflecting a more specialised utility rather than broad aquatic functionality.
The most cyclist-centric modification is the rehaut’s application of a tachymeter scale, specifically calibrated for cycling speeds as opposed to the high velocities typical of motor racing. This tachymeter enables cyclists to accurately calculate their average speed over a measured distance, integrating both performance and functionality directly into the design. This careful adaptation to cycling needs makes the FXD Chrono “Cycling Edition” a standout piece for both sporting professionals and watch enthusiasts.
Powering this Pelagos FXD Cycling Edition is the same movement that was used in the Alinghi Chronograph. The MT5813, is an automatic COSC Certified chronograph movement, with a 70-hour Power Reserve. Featuring time, date and chronograph maximum of 45 mins. In addition, 100m of water resistance, although the previous Red Bull model offered 200m. This is a cycling model, so the tachymeter scale has been designed for cyclists on a track.
This is priced at £4560.00 and won’t be a limited edition, but will sit alongside the rest of the FXD range. It’s a welcome inclusion, as Tudor keeps bringing out editions that are so Limited, that they’re almost not available.
A Welcome Addition To The FXD Family
This Pelagos FXD Cycling Edition doesn’t have any branding similar to the Alinghi version. There seems to be a theme that’s running through the FXD range, first sailing, now cycling, I wonder what the next edition may be. Surely a racing edition, unless Tudor’s Fishing Team have something up their sleeves for this time next year. Whatever they decide, it looks at first sight to fit in perfectly with the current range.
Over time, I guess, we will see other dial colours and more team collaborations, which is a good thing, right?
The Fxd has been touted as the “ultimate modern-day military diving watch,” however, the water resistance has halved and we now have a non-diving bezel. Perhaps the Pelagos purists may be up in arms at some stage, but I love the way Tudor is currently operating. There is symmetry in most of the ranges and they all seem to blend well together.
I hope to eventually get my hands on for a proper review, but until then, we can just enjoy this new welcomed addition.
