Citizen launched this rather unique vertical-clutch column wheel 8110 chronograph in 1972. It was also know as the “Challenge Timer” or “Easter Rabbit“, although now more commonly known as the “Bullhead“. Its production ran between 1972 and 1980 and there were numerous colour options available.
There were two movements in the Citizen Bullhead 8110, the 8100A and the 8110A. The movements are compact in size and are all high beat, running at 28,800 beats per hour. These movements feature hand winding and ‘fly back’. This allows you to zero the chronograph whilst it’s running, rather than having to stop it first, then restart. This permits instant stop and re-start of the chronograph function.
This Citizen Bullhead is the 67-9011. It features a silver dial with black sub-dials, black date & day wheels, black inner tachymeter ring. The 8110A had a 40 hour power reserve. Its unique case shape and positions of the crown and stop, start buttons, give this a very different look. The orange hands really stand out on the panda dial and are really striking. It look equally great on both the stainless steel bracelet and leather strap.
This was one of the watches that again i had been after for a while. It’s my first Chronograph since my Ellesse one i owned in the early 1990’s, which unfortunately no longer works. The case is slightly smaller than most i own, but then again most form this era are less than my ideal 39mm.
Even now, some 49 years since its release, the Citizen Bullhead 8110 looks great on the wrist. It is extremely comfortable to wear. It’s currently my only working chronograph in my collection, not that i use it at all. We all own watches with plenty of features we’ll probably never use, but they are still very cool collectable watches nevertheless.
