Christopher Ward C63 Sealander True GMT
Christopher Ward has unveiled Calibre CW-002 alongside the new flagship of the Sealander collection, the C63 Sealander True GMT. Powered by a COSC-certified, in-house True GMT movement, CW-002 represents a major technical milestone for the brand and underscores its continued commitment to making high-end mechanical watchmaking more accessible.
A True GMT, often referred to as a traveller GMT, allows the local hour hand to be adjusted independently in one-hour increments without interrupting the running of the minutes, seconds, or GMT hand. Crucially, the date adjusts automatically when crossing midnight in either direction, making it far more practical for frequent travellers than standard caller GMT designs. With no suitable off-the-shelf Swiss movement available, Christopher Ward took the ambitious step of developing its own. Overseen by Technical Director Frank Stelzer, the project required integrating a GMT mechanism into the existing CW-001 architecture without increasing overall thickness. The final calibre incorporates 23 new or modified components, achieving the functionality while preserving the proportions expected of a modern sports watch.
Visible through the exhibition caseback, Calibre CW-002 features a rhodium finish, circular Côtes de Genève decoration, and a skeletonised tungsten rotor combining sunray brushing and sandblasted surfaces. The twin-barrel architecture ensures stable power delivery, while the COSC certification guarantees chronometer-level precision.
The dial reflects the technical ambition of the movement beneath. Its multi-layer construction incorporates a recessed small seconds display at six o’clock, a power reserve indicator at nine, and an exposed GMT bridge at three, revealing part of the underlying mechanism. A grainé outer GMT track and applied indices add depth and texture, while diamond-polished surrounds and carefully layered surfaces create a clear visual hierarchy. The hands are linearly brushed with polished chamfers and filled with Grade X1 Super-LumiNova, with the GMT and power reserve indications highlighted in either orange or blue, depending on the dial variant.
The watch is housed in a 40.5mm Light-catcher™ stainless steel case, featuring a mix of brushed and polished finishes and fitted with box-domed sapphire crystals front and back. Despite an overall height of 14.15mm, the domed crystals help reduce its perceived thickness on the wrist, while 100 metres of water resistance ensures everyday versatility. Completing the package is Christopher Ward’s Bader bracelet, with polished bevels and a push-button micro-adjust clasp, alongside the option of a colour-matched integrated rubber strap.
Available in silver with orange accents or black with light blue highlights, the C63 Sealander True GMT marks a significant step forward for Christopher Ward. Combining an in-house COSC-certified True GMT movement with thoughtful design and strong value positioning, it stands as one of the most technically ambitious and compelling releases in the brand’s history. Pricing starts at £2,895 on rubber and £2,995 on the bracelet.
