True Genuine Historical Straps
Today, we’re spoiled for choice with the variety of watch straps available, but elastic straps have surged in popularity for their affordability and exceptional comfort. However, amidst the plethora of options online, it’s important to note that many elastic straps are modern interpretations inspired by those used by the Marine Nationale rather than authentic originals.
The genuine article doesn’t emerge out of thin air; it boasts a rich military heritage. NDC Straps stands as the sole purveyor of the authentic elastic strap, and their story is nothing short of captivating. So, grab yourself a cuppa, get comfortable, and let’s delve into the fascinating narrative of NDC Straps.
A collection of images showcasing the vintage navigation boards utilized by the Nageurs de Combat. Additionally, you can observe the reserve parachutes, which served as the source of the original elastic used to craft the first straps. These historical artefacts provide a glimpse into the tools and equipment utilized by these elite combat swimmers, offering valuable insight into their training and operations.
Background
Located in Worthing, West Sussex, NDC Straps specializes in supplying the original military straps used in the 1960s and 1970s. While many strap suppliers offer similar-looking products, they often fall short of mere imitations or cheap copies. For those seeking authenticity, NDC Straps stands as the sole destination.
Established in 2016, NDC Straps was initially founded not by Jacko but by two individuals who originally ran the company as a hobby. Facing challenges in sourcing additional stock, Jacko stepped in and successfully acquired a substantial inventory, which we’ll delve into later. Driven by his passion for the brand, Jacko began assisting them, eventually leading to an agreement for him to take over the brand.
Under his guidance, NDC Straps has flourished into its current state. Looking ahead, Jacko envisions further growth for the brand, ensuring it receives the attention it deserves even after his eventual retirement. Jacko’s affinity for France runs deep, stemming from a lifelong connection nurtured since childhood. Regular holidays spent in France have woven a strong bond with the country, where both family and friends have established roots. This enduring connection has not only enriched his experiences but also fostered a profound appreciation for French culture, landscapes, and traditions.
History
Marine Nationale
French Navy divers coined these straps as the “Marine Nationale” straps during the peak of the mid-1960s. Combat divers affiliated with the French Navy, were also known as the “Nageurs de Combat” of the Marine Nationale, were the inventors. Watches issued in these times, came only as a watch head, with no straps, so the onus to supply a strap was on the owner. Some opted for Perlon (woven nylon) straps, but the more inventive looked elsewhere. Why buy a strap when you could make your own?
They favoured the elastic straps from their reserve parachutes. These straps had the perfect width for their watches, prompting their selection. They cut a length of elastic from these parachutes, threaded it through the spring bars, and stitched it together to create a loop, thus forming the basic strap. The elasticity of this material made it ideal for stretching over a diving suit, and its military-grade quality ensured durability against any challenges they encountered.
A Gentle Giant
My introduction to Jacko took place at the BQ Watches show last September, where he had a modest stand showcasing his impressive array of straps. A true family man, Jacko enlisted the help of his two daughters to spread the word about NDC Straps. Their presence added a personal touch to the event, reflecting Jacko’s commitment to his family and brand.
Jacko, the driving force behind NDC, left a lasting impression on me during our recent chat. Our initial Zoom conversation extended well beyond two hours, fueled by his evident passion for the brand and palpable optimism for its future.
A dedicated collector of Military Memorabilia, particularly items related to Special Forces, Marine National, and the SBS, Jacko’s man cave is a captivating display of his passions, sure to intrigue any military enthusiast. With NDC now holding much of the original elastic, Jacko has secured a stable supply for many years to come.
The Mother Load
In his quest to locate the original elastic, Jacko made a pivotal phone call to a military surplus company in France. Serendipitously, the woman he spoke with happened to reside next door to the military base. Remarkably, she had worked there for four decades, sewing the elastic onto TAP parachutes. This chance encounter forged a profound connection between them. Jacko not only struck gold in finding the source of the elastic but also cultivated a lasting friendship with this woman. Their bond remains strong to this day, a testament to the unexpected connections forged through shared passion and mutual respect.
A Chance Meeting
Through the introduction made by the woman, Jacko had the opportunity to meet the owner of the factory, which had remained within the same family for several generations. He seized the chance to acquire the entire stock from the woman and was honoured to purchase the now-obsolete material directly from the factory. At the time, the parachutes were utilising the green elastic with the yellow pinstripe, though earlier and rarer variants featured khaki/tan elastic with a red pinstripe. Jacko retains only a handful of these rare specimens, potentially marking the end of their supply.
Going Beyond A Passion
No Imitations Here
NDC offer special projects with bespoke designs and has in the past, proudly completed such for military Sqns based in Poole and Hereford. The strap hooks are available in varied designs and finishes and can be fully customised with one-off designs.

An Amazing Opportunity
While researching this article, I stumbled upon several photos showcasing NDC straps prominently displayed inside a Tudor Boutique. Jacko was asked personally by Sven Olsen (Tudor’s General Manager) to provide a quantity of NDC straps to be used in the displays of new Tudor Boutiques. I wear mine on a Tudor FXD, a watch crafted in collaboration with the Marine Nationale, evident from the “M.N.” inscription and the year of manufacture engraved on the case back of each timepiece. Offering versatility, all NDC straps are standardised to a 21mm width, ensuring a seamless fit for watches ranging from 19mm to 22mm.
Military Influence
The undeniable influence of all things military permeates our daily lives in myriad ways, shaping technology, fashion, and culture. Military-inspired fashion trends, such as camouflage patterns and utility wear, have left an indelible mark on the fashion industry.
Even the language we use, filled with terms like “strategy” and “mission,” reflects military influence. Beyond tangible products and concepts, the values of discipline, teamwork, and resilience instilled by military training resonate throughout our communities. Thus, whether consciously acknowledged or not, the military’s influence remains omnipresent, underscoring its profound impact on our everyday lives.
These straps, once simple in design, have evolved significantly over time. Now equipped with buckles and hooks for added convenience and accessibility, they have transitioned from purely military use to the broader domestic market. This transition mirrors the trajectory of numerous military-inspired items that have found their way into civilian life throughout the years. As these straps have become more commercialised, they serve as a tangible reminder of the enduring influence of military innovation on everyday products.
My Final Thoughts
You can find imitation military straps from various suppliers at a lower cost, or opt for the authentic, original straps from NDC. Treat yourself and your watch to the real deal—it deserves it. If you happen to meet Jacko at an event, take a moment to chat with him. His deep knowledge of the military and his passion for the brand are infectious. I wish him all the success with NDC Straps and look forward to crossing paths with him soon.
Connections and community are what we at Watch Brothers strive to achieve. Every connection to a brand offers that chance to help perpetuate both them and us in this horological world we play in daily. We are extremely fortunate to find brands like NDC and others like them.
