Exquisite German Finishing
The Glashütte Original PanoReserve has long been a showcase of German watchmaking expertise, and the latest version with its striking grey dial is no exception. With its signature off-centred dial layout and meticulously finished movement, this piece combines elegance and precision.
The rich, textured grey dial offers a sophisticated backdrop that enhances the watch’s minimalist aesthetic, while its asymmetrical design draws the eye to the intricate details and complications. In this hands-on review, we take a closer look at what makes the PanoReserve such a standout in Glashütte Original’s lineup, exploring everything from the craftsmanship to the functionality of this beautifully balanced timepiece.
Asymmetric Beauty
One of the first things that strikes you with the PanoReserve is its minimalist thin bezel, allowing you to enjoy the full beauty of the dial. The ideal size for those with an office job, this will easily slip under a cuff. At 40mm x 11.7mm and with a cracking-looking dial, you may think twice about hiding it under your sleeve and showing it off. You can’t look at the PanoReserve without comparing it to an A. Lange & Söhne
The watch is extremely well-finished and precisely made and has a typical German look and feel. Something Glashutte Original should be extremely proud of. One of the highlights of the Pano collection has to be the manually wound in-house calibre 65-01. It’s a 4Hz movement with a power reserve of 42 hours. You’ll find a classic Glashütte three-quarter plate adorned with the signature Glashütter Streifen stripes and finished with bevelled edges. But that’s just the beginning. There are also blued screws, and if you look closely, you’ll notice the hand-engraved balance bridge and second cock. Further showcasing the fine craftsmanship, the movement features a duplex swan-neck fine adjustment for precise regulation.
It’s The Dial That’s The Real Highlight
The distinctiveness of the Glashütte Original PanoReserve lies in its unique dial layout. From left to right, it showcases an asymmetrical hour and minute display, with a small seconds sub-dial positioned below. Besides these is the brand’s signature Panorama Date, aptly named for its clear, bold presentation, and in the upper right corner, a retrograde power reserve indicator completes the dial’s harmonious design.
A Beautifully Finished Movement
The applied indices and white gold hands are inlaid with Super LumiNova and add to a very upmarket feel of this watch. But for me, it’s the date display that’s the real winner. Dual discs that are so clear to read and feature on all the Pano models. The dial has a galvanic grey tone that works perfectly with the polished steel case. You can’t help but compare this model to the A. Lange & Söhn Lange 1, in White Gold.
Although with a price tag of £43,600.00, the Glashütte Original PanoReserve at £11,000.00 is a much more affordable option for those seeking more value for money.
Handling a Glashütte Original for the first time is an experience that reveals the remarkable quality of its craftsmanship. The PanoReserve model, in particular, is beautifully balanced, with a dial that’s meticulously proportioned for excellent legibility. On the wrist, it feels comfortable and refined; though this piece came on a bracelet, pairing it with a strap would transform its look entirely.
There’s an undeniable urge to take it off frequently, just to marvel at the intricate movement. The interplay of silver and gold finishes, set off by blued screws and an array of rubies, is mesmerising. This is German engineering at its finest—a testament to Glashütte Original’s commitment to excellence, which continues to be appreciated from all angles.
