It’s Not A Tudor Pelagos Killer
The Christopher Ward C60 Trident Lumiére has just been unveiled, and it’s already generating a lot of buzz. Let’s clear something up right away—this isn’t a Pelagos killer. While it competes at a lower price point, it’s not fair to label it as such, as that’s more of a clickbait tactic.
This watch is yet another strong addition to Christopher Ward’s expanding lineup of dive watches. We received the blue version for review, and from the moment it came out of the box, it made a strong impression. Right off the bat, it’s clear this is an outstanding piece with enough features to challenge higher-priced competitors. I’d recommend trying it on—it’s incredibly comfortable, with great wrist presence without being too overstated.
For what you get for your money, you will be pushed to find a similar specced watch for much less and this is certainly punching above its price point. Let’s start with the grade 2 titanium case, at 41mm, it’s bang on size for most, whilst not feeling too big. With a lug-to-lug of 47.9mm, it’s still under that 48mm sweet spot for fitting a smaller wrist and with a 22m lug width, you will find plenty of straps that will work well with them.
They carefully designed the detailing on the slimmer 10.85mm case, and with polished chamfers on the case flanks, it feels even slimmer on the wrist. The added crown guards are a nice detail and do a great job of protecting the screw in crown. On the underside of the case, you can see the remodelled case back and polished detailing surrounding the exhibition sapphire crystal. This highlights the movement and signed Christopher Ward rotor.
Amazing Value For Money
The COSC Certified Sellita SW300 powers the watch, featuring a slimmer profile than the SW200, which Christopher Ward typically uses. This allows for a reduction in the case thickness. The SW300 will give you around 56 hours of power reserve and within the case 300m of water resistance. The matching grade 2 titanium bracelet has been finished at the same level as the case. But has the added addition of quick-release pins and a push button divers extension.
The 22mm bracelet slims down to 16mm at the clasp, which although does feel a little long, does clip securely. Each of the H-style links has a brushed finish, matching perfectly with the case, with similar polished chamfers around its outer edges. The bracelet does share a resemblance to the Oyster bracelet that Rolex has used for many decades.
With that, all said, it’s the dial that will grab the most attention. There are three versions, a grey, orange and the one we have here the blue. It has a matte fumé gradient, being darker at the edges and brighter in the centre. Which does work, but I would have preferred a flat colour. However, it does look great, especially when paired with the cherry on top of the cake, which is Xenoprint’s Globolight®.
They inject a solid piece of lume mixed with ceramic powder into a mold. Forming the single block used for the hour indices. They repeat this precise process for the hands and logo, producing a striking display of lume from every angle in low light. Even up close, the indices feature finely crafted chamfers, showcasing Christopher Ward’s attention to detail with the Lumière. Once charged, the lume emits a deep, long-lasting glow that surpasses most other watches.
Plenty To Admire
The Christopher Ward C60 Trident Lumiére offers plenty to admire. Starting with its pricing: £1985.00 with the bracelet or £1650.00 with the rubber strap. This watch delivers exceptional value, featuring a Grade 2 titanium case and bracelet, a COSC-certified Sellita SW300 movement. As well as a ceramic dive bezel, a case thickness under 11mm, 300m water resistance, and a helium escape valve. While there could have been upgrades, like using Grade 5 titanium, doing so would have driven the cost higher.
Christopher Ward continues its streak of impressive releases, following the C60 Trident Pro GMT and the C65 Super Compressor Elite. The C60 Trident Lumière is already generating buzz among CW enthusiasts. It seems poised to become a standout model in their lineup for years to come. With its slim profile and lightweight design, this watch is likely to be a hit, especially among fans of no-date models.
It’s essential to recognise that comparing watches from different brands and price points can be misleading. The C60 Trident Lumière isn’t meant to rival the Pelagos, as it comes in at half the price, and the two brands occupy different tiers in the watch world. However, for those working with a smaller budget, the C60 Trident Lumière has a strong appeal. Christopher Ward has certainly found the right balance with this model, making it a compelling option for many.
