Designed To Endure Everyday Adventures
The watch world sometimes succumbs to the hype, with certain brands and models drawing attention for all the wrong reasons—overhyped, clickbaity, and ultimately disappointing. But then there’s Arken Watches, a brand that actually lives up to the buzz. Case in point: their latest model, the Arken Alterum, has sold out yet again in record time. That kind of demand isn’t just hype—it’s well-earned proof they’re doing something right.
Birmingham-based owner Kenneth Lam has nailed it once again. Back in September 2021, Arken’s debut model, the Instrumentum, hit the scene and was scooped up so quickly that it’s now part of their archives. Fast forward to June 2023, and their latest release took the watch world by storm, selling out almost immediately. Since then, we’ve seen a few restocks and drops, but blink, and they’re gone—proof that Kenneth has truly perfected the formula for watchmaking success.
I Will Find A Way Or Make One
I have been trying to get hold of an Arken Alterum for some time now and, although I have seen one many times, have been unsuccessful in getting one in for a review. In fact, as this year’s British Watchmakers Day in March, I picked the Alterum as my watch of the entire show. Proof that among many of his peers, the Alterum had something special that made it stand out.
During the event, Ken brought along a prototype of a special version of the Alterum: the Year of the Dragon edition. This striking model featured a deep red dial adorned with a dragon-scale texture that was an absolute killer. To complete the look, it came paired with a matching red strap and a custom-engraved case back. Limited to just 60 pieces, this edition was more than just a watch; it was a tribute to Ken’s success and his mother’s 60th birthday—a heartfelt and fitting celebration.
Whatever You Do Make It Your Mission
The brand name “Arken” has a charming origin, drawn from the Birmingham nickname “Our Ken”. A term of endearment that feels perfectly fitting. The watch name “Alterum”, meaning “the other one,” is equally spot on, following naturally from Ken’s earlier creation, the Instrumentum.
When Arken’s latest drop went live last week, I knew I had to act fast, especially after missing out on the Year of the Dragon edition. At precisely 3 PM on December 12th, 2024, I sprang into action and secured a grey-dial version. Less than a week later, it arrived, and I can confidently say—it was worth the rush.
Along with the watch, I couldn’t resist snagging a few extras from their GEAR section. If black is your go-to colour (as it clearly is for Ken), their apparel range will tempt you. I picked up a cap, a t-shirt, link adapters (to fit a regular strap), and a vibrant orange Recoil rubber strap. That orange strap is an absolute stunner—so much so that I doubt I’ll ever go back to the standard grey one that came with the watch.
Between the watch itself and the gear, I couldn’t be happier. Arken has nailed the balance between thoughtful design and functionality, and Ken’s attention to detail shines through in every element.
Ken’s A Real Story Teller
When you buy a watch from Arken, you need to realise exactly what you’re getting. The Arken Alterum, at only £600.00, you get an amazing spec list, in fact, if the watch was 3 times the price, it would still be an exceptional value.
With a grade 2 titanium case that measures 38mm x 46mm x 13mm, this will fit the majority of wrists with ease. Built with travel in mind, this also features dual-time and day & night indicators, which is a nice touch. Offering 200m of water resistance will be more than adequate for the majority of owners. A cracking matte grey dial with teardrop cardinal markers, all filled with BGW9 Super-Luminova. A 5-handed dial with hours, minutes, seconds and GMT. With the fifth hand on the date, sub-dial at 6 o’clock. All are perfectly -proportioned and balanced. It has many nice touches, showing attention to detail. One that stood out was the full-length seconds hand, so fine and delicate.
With no rotating bezels in sight, the Arken Alterum seems to span different genres of watch types. There is a distinct utilitarian look and feel that can’t be avoided and should be celebrated, in fact. It has the specs of a dive watch but has no dive bezel and the feel of a field watch from a future time. The case shape, too, has a distinct brutalist design, and the use of the crown for both the time and GMT functions is brilliant. It’s so simple to set and forget, with a simple press of the screw-down pusher, the date advances with ease.
Everyday Carry
With Ken’s love for EDC (Everyday Carry), it’s evident that his passion has filtered down to his watches. The Alterum epitomises EDC and feels an integral part of it. Everyday Carry (EDC) refers to the items people actively carry each day to navigate life efficiently and stay prepared for various situations. These items typically include essentials like a wallet, keys, phone, and a watch but often extend to practical tools such as a pocketknife, torch, multi-tool, or pen.
EDC is rooted in the philosophy of preparedness, functionality, and personalisation, emphasising quality, durability, and design. Enthusiasts often tailor their EDC to suit their lifestyle, combining practicality with style in a seamless blend of form and function.
Closing out 2024 with the Arken Alterum was the perfect way to end the year. Since adding it to my collection, it’s barely left my wrist—a true testament to how much I’ve connected with this piece. Personally, I think the orange strap elevates the watch even further, fitting seamlessly into my collection and adding a vibrant pop of colour that I absolutely love.
Ken has really nailed it with this design, finding that elusive sweet spot that makes the Alterum such a standout. While this might be the final time we see this particular dial colour, it leaves me even more excited to see what’s next from Arken. If this watch is any indication, the brand has plenty more to offer. I’ll be eagerly waiting to see where they go from here.

Ken can regularly be heard on the Form & Function Podcast, sharing his passion for watches and all EDC gear. It’s so apparent that Arken is much more than a watch brand, it feels like a lifestyle, a way of living. I am so excited to see what watches and EDC gear Ken turns out over the next few years.
