They invite us to appreciate the essence of watchmaking by stripping away unnecessary distractions and focusing on core design elements and craftsmanship. Whether you’re a seasoned collector or a newcomer to the world of watches, monochrome watches offer a classic yet modern aesthetic that seamlessly complements any style.
So before we delve into our top 5 monochrome watches, let’s look at their history and why the still have so much appeal.
A Brief History Of Monochrome Watches
The fascination with monochrome watches can be traced back to the early days of wristwatches. During the 1920s and 1930s, wristwatches began to gain popularity as a stylish accessory. At the time, most watches featured monochromatic designs, often in black, white, or grey, as they were practical and easy to read. As watchmaking technology advanced, the introduction of stainless steel cases further enhanced the monochrome aesthetic, giving rise to a new era of understated elegance.
In the 1950s and 1960s, monochrome watches truly began to flourish. Iconic brands like Rolex, Omega, and Patek Philippe embraced the monochrome palette, creating timeless classics that continue to be revered today. The simplicity of these watches allowed them to transcend trends and remain relevant across generations. The clean lines and minimalist dials became synonymous with sophistication and elegance, solidifying the monochrome watch’s place in horological history.
The Allure of Monochrome Watches
Monochrome watches hold a special allure that sets them apart from their more colourful counterparts. Here are some reasons why these timepieces continue to captivate watch enthusiasts and fashion-forward individuals alike:
Timeless Design
Monochrome watches embody a design philosophy that values timelessness over trends. Their minimalist aesthetics ensure that they never go out of style, making them versatile companions for any occasion.
Versatility
The understated elegance of monochrome watches allows them to seamlessly complement a wide range of outfits, from formal attire to casual wear. Whether you’re attending a business meeting or enjoying a leisurely weekend, a monochrome watch effortlessly adapts to your style.
Focus On Craftsmanship
With their limited colour palette, monochrome watches draw attention to the craftsmanship and details of the watch itself. The absence of bold colours places emphasis on the quality of materials, the precision of the movement, and the finesse of the design.
Simplicity and Clarity
Monochrome dials often prioritize readability, with contrasting elements that make it easy to tell the time at a glance. The clean and uncluttered design enhances legibility, making them practical choices for daily wear.
Enduring Appeal
Monochrome watches evoke a sense of nostalgia and heritage, connecting wearers to the rich history of watchmaking. Their classic designs resonate with enthusiasts who appreciate the timeless elegance of vintage-inspired timepieces.
Tudor Black Bay
What’s not to like about the Tudor Black Bay, yes we’ve seen this in various colours prior to this release, but a classic black with white just seems to tick so many more boxes. Less is more, as there is nothing new about this model, we have the same case, bracelet and movement that we have seen before. Sometimes it is what we don’t see that stands out the most.
An all-black dial with a subtle grey colour scale, offering a serene option for those less fussy of us. A 41mm steel case with a black dial, with silver applied hour indices, filled with Super LumiNova that offers a green glow in the dark. No matter which model you choose, the Black Bay will always be great value too.
With 3 strap options, a 3 or 5-link bracelet, or a black rubber strap, all with a T-fit clasp. The COSC-certified movement is now standard with the Black Bay models and has 200m of water resistance to boot. Priced between £3,630.oo to £3,910.00 depending on the strap option, this will always be a strong contender for anyone searching for a monochrome watch.

Longines HydroConquest Black Ceramic

First out in 2019, the Black Ceramic HydroConquest from Longines still has the same stealthy appeal it had on its release. Now a few years on, it’s still relevant and still looks as good. Although it has a 43mm highly polished ceramic case, it’s machined from a single piece and is extremely light in comparison to its steel counterpart.
With a black textured rubber strap, this is a great combo and one that’s very comfortable too, this also has a ceramic double-folding clasp. Featuring a brushed black unidirectional bezel surrounding the sapphire crystal. Below this is the black dial, adorned with huge Arabic numerals at 12, 6 and 9 o’clock. Sadly this has a date window at 3 and I feel it would look much better without this. The polished minute and hour hands are filled with Super LumiNova as is the dot on the lollipop seconds hand.
With an L88 calibre movement, this offers an impressive 75 hours of power reserve, add this to the 300m of water resistance, and you have a great value watch. Priced at £3,950.00, it stands out from the crowd as an impressive watch and one worth considering.

Rolex Submariner Oyster
Among the world’s most famous watches, the Rolex Submariner stands tall, with its latest iteration, the 124060, continuing to uphold its legendary status. This design has become a benchmark for tool and dive watches, inspiring countless imitations and tributes across the horological landscape. Its influence is undeniable, earning it a revered spot on the tool watch pedestal.
Though the Submariner’s fame might suggest it’s lost its allure among collectors, the reality is quite the opposite. Demand is through the roof, and acquiring one has become a quest that no amount of love or money seems to expedite. Featuring a 41mm Oystersteel case with a refined profile and slimmer lugs, this modern Submariner has subtly evolved from its 40mm predecessors. Rolex also revamped both the bracelet and the movement, ensuring that while everything feels familiar, there’s a fresh new edge to it.
The Submariner’s enduring appeal lies in its ability to remain both unchanged and yet subtly improved. After all, when you’ve got the perfect formula, why mess with it too much? Priced at £8,050.00, the Submariner is a staple in many collections, though securing one often means signing up for a lengthy waiting list.

Hanhart 417ES

Hanhart is a front-runner when it comes to the development of German chronograph watches and is steeped in history. Manufacturing watches since 1882, they know a thing or two about them. The 417 ES was initially produced in the mid-1950s and was resurrected in 2020, and has given it the modern attention it deserves. Now a 42mm stainless steel case, with its recognisable coin-edge omnidirectional bezel, this is still a popular piece.
The dial has a standard bi-compax layout with a small running seconds at the 9 o’clock and minute counter for the chronograch at 3. Arount the outer edge is the chronograph seconds track, all the text is printed in white with the Arabic numers filled with Super LumiNova. Cathedral hands adorn the hour, minute and chronograph seconds and balance the overall look of the dial.
Chronograph pushers site astride the crown at 3 and the case is finished in a mixture of polished and brushed surfaces, adding to the allure of this piece. The Hanhart 417ES will set you back a competitively priced £1,650.00 and although there is a splash of red on the bezel at the 12 o’ clock, this I would say still falls into a monochromatic piece.

Tag Heuer Carrera Chronograph
Lastly, in our top 5 monochrome watches, we offer up the TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph. A timeless classic which just oozes appeal. Straight off the bat, we see the try-compax layout with the black Opaline dial. A 41mm polished stainless steel case, houses the calibre 16 movement, this offers 42 hours of power reserve as well as 100m of water resistance.
The dial layout offers hours and minutes, whilst the chronograph has a 1/4 second, 30 minutes counter and 12 hours counter. The date sits at 3 with the logo and model stradelling either side of it, overall its extremly well balanced, especially as there is a lot going on with it. The upper and lower sub-dials have a grooved ring pattern which adds to the details on the dial, whilst the rehaut has the chronograph running seconds track printed around it.
Priced at £4,350.00 this is a cracking looking watch although the matching H-link bracelet does feel a little dated. This would look great on a black rubber strap, next time I’m in a boutique, I’ll have to give it a proper look.
